In order to prepare any organization for a successful migration to a new cloud architecture requires significant planning and analysis. This planning starts with BlueSilverShift conducting a cloud readiness assessment following our proven framework, which entails multiple phases
During the assessment phase, BlueSilverShift will gather all available information about the current infrastructure and applications hosted and managed by the IT department. A detailed inventory of all services will be developed along with current resource requirements that are deployed. We will also interview key stakeholders to understand what business drivers there are that rely on technology or could benefit from better use of technology down the road.
Optionally, during the assessment phase, BlueSilverShift can install tools that will gather information on current systems in order to provide detailed costing analysis for how much the services will cost once moved to the cloud. These tools analyze system performance and resource utilization over a 2 to 4 week period in order to gather a snapshot of what the host requirements would be in the cloud.
For the analysis phase, we use the detailed inventory collected in the previous phase and begin to categorize each of the applications and infrastructure based on their individual complexity of migration to the cloud. Factors include whether a system is stand alone or highly integrated, and the availability requirements of the application in terms of whether it is core to the business operation. The results of this analysis will form the basis of the roadmap and classification that is done in the next stages.
Optionally, during the analysis phase, if the tools were installed to gather information about the current systems performance and resource requirements, then the results of these tools will be reviewed in order to determine the optimal cloud configuration and costing.
The classification phase helps to determine whether an application is a quick win (something that is relatively easy to migrate to the cloud, but has high value/impact to the organization – also referred to as low hanging fruit), a large scale migration (those that require more effort, but still have longer term value to be in the cloud), or a future initiative (those to be tackled at a later date due to their complexity or cost of migration, possibly when the system in question is due to be refreshed or replaced). This information is used in the next step to build the relative prioritization and timeline.
The final stage is to develop and present the overall roadmap that lays out a recommended approach for moving services to the cloud. The roadmap may include an approach that involves doing an initial proof of concept with non-production systems in order to get the IT team familiar with the fundamentals of cloud technologies. The graphic below depicts the successful migration methodology that BlueSilverShift has guided clients through in the past. The detailed roadmap will include a document that provides not only the recommended order in which services should be migrated to the cloud, but also the economic impact that can help to form the basis for a business case or multiple business cases used to get approval to undertake the migrations.
Architecting a cloud environment that meets your unique business needs around security, scalability, and technology stack can be a complex undertaking. As your organization may not have expertise in the capabilities and best practices around cloud architecture, it’s important to work with a partner who has the experience required to guide you along the way and help you avoid the common pitfalls.
BlueSilverShift’s cloud solution architects can design comprehensive solutions for our clients from Azure infrastructure design and Office 365 to application microservices design that leverage all the benefits of PaaS. Some key areas often overlooked by clients when designing their public cloud solution are naming standards, operational considerations and governance for when the solution is in production.
We have a proven repeatable methodology that can be customized to your unique naming conventions while aligning with Azure best practices. On the governance side, we have developed a proprietary solution that tracks Azure resource creation and utilization to alert you when resources fall out of predefined requirements or parameters. Once our cloud architects have designed a solution to meet your needs, we have highly skilled cloud technical specialists who can implement the design and work closely with your operations teams to ensure knowledge is transferred for ongoing support.
If you are an established company that has significant investment in on premises IT systems, you may be concerned about business disruption that could come from migrating to the cloud. Moving to the cloud is not an all or nothing decision. Your business doesn’t need to turn on a dime and suddenly you’re operating in the cloud. Organizations often have a material portion of their applications that can be migrated to the cloud with a proven approach and operate perfectly well in a hybrid configuration for a long time until the business or systems are ready.
BlueSilverShift’s migration approach to the cloud can take many forms:
Move application to the cloud leveraging IaaS
Modernize your application using PaaS, containers and serverless
Re-write application to use cloud native capabilities
Migrate to SaaS like Microsoft Office 365 and Dynamics 365
Retire application that is no longer used
Retain application in its current form
BlueSilverShift has helped many clients develop and document their cloud strategy. Once this strategy is documented and agreed to by all major stakeholders within the organization, our clients find that they are much better equipped to make future technology decisions that are aligned across the company. No matter where you are in the journey to the cloud, we can assist you by ensuring you achieve the best return on investment while improving reliability, security, agility and aligning IT with your business needs.
The approach that we take for building your cloud strategy is as follows:
- Conduct a series of workshops with executive level IT and business leadership
- One-on-one information gathering with key IT and business stakeholders
- Identification of common goals and areas of misalignment
- Capture current state of infrastructure and applications
- Current business and technology challenges and needs
- Future business and technology needs
From this discovery work we will bring in industry best practice recommendations and to produce a comprehensive cloud strategy that will include:
- Future state recommendations
- Technology decision frame work
- Short, medium and long-term cloud opportunities
- Cost analysis including savings, migration and ongoing cloud operating costs
Without a cloud strategy, we have seen many clients struggle to approach the cloud cohesively and fail to achieve a positive ROI focused on their current and future needs. In addition, key items like security and governance are not comprehensively addressed leaving significant business risk. Many of our clients that have started using cloud computing without a strong strategy in place that addresses security often have significant gaps in their posture and approach. This can result in data breaches, data loss and significant rework.
Migrating to cloud platforms like Azure requires a specialized skillset that most IT organizations don’t have. Leveraging a partner who specializes in Microsoft Azure and migrating customer systems to the public cloud can decrease time to value and ensure the success of your cloud strategy. BlueSilverShift has the specialized skill-sets and years of experience in successfully migrating clients throughout North America.
