The Story of Finning + BlueSilverShift.
A Partnership of Epic Proportions.
Historically Finning has not placed a huge value on technology because they sell and service things that are traditionally very “low tech,” such as tractors, excavators and trucks.
Enter the Internet of Things (IoT) to change the world as they know it. As in every industry, the new digital reality means that Finning’s customers now demand more. They want real-time information and telematics from their equipment. Customers expect solutions that will allow them to maximize up-time and optimize productivity for all their vehicles and equipment.
Staying ahead of the competition in this digital business world will be no easy task, but Finning is up to the battle. They are facing the challenge head on and have launched a global customer web portal that provides their customers with not only telemetry equipment data, but also powerful embedded Power BI dashboards (built by Finning and BlueSilverShift) that leverage predictive analytics.
Welcome to a world where machines tell us when they need servicing and provide recommendations on how to minimize their downtime. Finning customers can now order parts and track the order delivery status online.
- Spoiler alert: Finning is now set to save over $1.5 Million per year
Finning engaged with the team at BlueSilverShift to develop an Azure cloud reference architecture for this portal. It puts Microsoft Azure at the forefront of Finning’s IoT strategy for CAT customers around the world.
The team at BlueSilverShift are experts at maximizing the value of Azure for businesses, so were asked by Finning to lead the charge of creating and implementing a plan for a full integration with Finning’s development team while minimizing their long-term operational costs and supporting the Azure platform.
Microsoft Azure’s Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings were perfect for the job, and the team at BlueSilverShift knew this and used it to Finning’s advantage. The joint team of engineers were able to focus on developing a solution with maximum value to customers quickly, rather than worrying about managing any on premises infrastructure.
The team at BlueSilverShift didn’t stop there and the partnership with Finning blossomed even further and the process was streamlined more. When a comprehensive set of Azure Resource Manager templates were introduced, this enabled the team to build up and tear down entire development, test, staging and production environments with the simple click of the button.
BlueSilverShift then went out and built an Azure DevOps deployment pipeline that not only deployed the entire Azure virtual infrastructure, but also Finning’s application code to a multitude of environments (development, QA, staging and production).
From weeks with multiple people to an hour with a single person equates to an estimated savings of $100,000 for every build. Finning deploys every 2 weeks, which represents over $1.5 million in savings each year … now that’s a huge success!
Dollars and Cents:
- Estimated Cost Savings for Finning to date = $2,000,000
- Estimated Future Cost Savings = $10’s of Millions
- Business Value = Priceless!
Once in production, this web application platform will provide Finning with an entirely new revenue source beyond selling and servicing heavy equipment. It is expected to generate tens of millions of dollars in recurring subscription revenues and will be the centerpiece of what Finning is trying to achieve with its corporate strategic direction.
In their most recent financial report, Finning states that innovation is one of their three strategic pillars and investing in the digital division that is building this project as a platform to build on “is expected to accelerate delivery of innovative customer solutions, improve customer experience, and generate new revenue opportunities.” This is believed to be crucial to Finning’s planned growth and stated commitment to growing return on invested capital (ROIC).
“Enabled strategy to execution on several technology projects. I like the broad skill set across the team, their understanding of technology best practices, and the targeted delivery on statements of work.” Norman Carr – Digital Enterprise Architect at Finning
The joint quest for IoT and Microsoft Azure success is ongoing between BlueSilverShift and Finning. It really is a partnership of epic proportions.
