BlueSilverShift is working with a major retailer that operates its entire infrastructure out of a data center located in their head office. In addition, the company has a disaster recovery location that contains copies of some of its critical applications and data, but due to cost constraints it is not a full backup of all systems. There is one major flaw with this client’s disaster recovery plan, which is that their DR site is located within the same seismic zone as their primary data center.
This means that in the event of a major earthquake in the zone, there is a high likelihood that both the primary and secondary locations will be knocked out or have degraded service. Given how critical it is for point of sale applications to all communicate back to these data centers, the company would be ground to a halt in all retail locations, even those that were not directly impacted by the earthquake.
BlueSilverShift recommended implementing a cloud hosted disaster recovery and business continuity solution using Azure as the platform to provide a multi-region disaster recovery solution. By implementing Azure Site Recovery, BlueSilverShift was able to replicate all of the client’s hosts, applications and data to Azure and, in addition, store copies of all the data across two Azure regions for a higher level of resiliency.
By using a multi-region approach, Blue Silver Shift was able to provide the client with a solution that could withstand a failure in their primary on premises data center as well as a regional failure within Azure. So if one Azure region was unavailable for some reason when a failover needed to be initiated, the data and resources would still be available to restore from the secondary Azure region.
In the end, the client received a disaster recovery solution that was able to withstand multiple disaster scenarios in order to ensure that the company is able to continue to operate in all of its retail locations that are not impacted by any major seismic event.
They were also able to achieve a more cost effective solution that enabled replication of data for all of the company’s systems rather than only the critical systems that were covered previously due to cost constraint reasons.
