A case study.
Our client, a large multinational Industrial Distribution company of heavy equipment with operations on 3 continents and 12,000 employees, was looking to significantly enhance their customer experience leveraging the proliferation and capabilities of the Internet of Things (IoT).
To support this, our client wanted to build a global customer web portal to provide their customers with real time telemetry data and leverage predictive analytics that can provide recommendations on how equipment can be serviced in a most cost-effective manner, minimizing idle time and downtime.
BlueSilverShift was originally engaged to develop a reference architecture leveraging Microsoft Azure for the portal. Utilizing Azure as the application platform would allow the client to achieve the scalability, global reach and pay for services as consumed rather than make significant capital investments. The technical architecture developed leveraged PaaS for a significant portion of the environment with Azure SQL Database and Power BI being the foundation.
With the technical architecture defined, we were then engaged to implement a DevOps model for the creation and ongoing operations of the global portal application. We implemented an end to end Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) deployment pipeline including Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates to deploy and scale the environments as needed. By leveraging VSTS and Azure, the entire production environment was deployed by a single person in less than an hour.
Through the use of VSTS and Azure, our client saves over $100,000 each time their application is deployed compared to their previous method of application deployment. As this global portal expands it is estimated that the annual savings will equate to over $500,000 per year.
